CEAC Tops Jamaica Institution of Engineers 2022 Awards

CEAC Solutions Company Limited (CEAC) walked away with the top honour at the 2022 Jamaica Institute of Engineers (JIE) annual JIE Awards Dinner & Gala, winning Engineering Project of the Year for the Port Royal Street Coastal Revetment Project.

The project, which was commissioned by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), costs over JM$1.3 Billion and was completed in March 2022. Since then, it has improved the aesthetic of the entryway to the capital city Kingston’s downtown, while enhancing Jamaica’s resilience to the negative impacts of Climate Change. The project included design and construction of a one-kilometre composite seawall revetment structure, upgrading of storm water drainage features, rehabilitation and raising of one kilometre of existing roadway, installation of a 4.7-metre-wide boardwalk, and the creation of an 80-metre fishing beach with sanitary facilities for local fisherfolk.

As Consulting Engineers on the project, CEAC’s role included design of the shoreline protection, redesign of a section of Port Royal Street and the recreational facilities using coastal modelling, and quality control of the project through construction monitoring. All designs were done considering the impacts of climate change to ensure the revetment structure will be resilient to sea level rise and wave climate throughout its design life.

“We are honoured to be recognised by the JIE, and we are proud of the role we have played this project, which will reduce Jamaica’s vulnerability to natural disasters,” said Dr Christopher Burgess, CEAC’s Managing Director, who received the award of the company’s behalf. “We see the positive impact this project has had on the downtown communities bordering Kingston Harbour, and remain dedicated to enhancing and protecting Jamaican communities and society through excellence and innovation.”

The JIE Engineering Project of the Year award is the most coveted among Jamaica’s engineering community, and is given annually to recognize successfully executed projects that represent excellence in local engineering.

At the 2022 awards gala, which was being held for the first time since 2019, the JIE also presented awards to the top Engineering Students from the University of the West Indies, Mona, University of Technology, Jamaica and the Caribbean Maritime University as well as an award for Excellence in Engineering.
