Bahamas Water Supply Improvement Project – Climate Related Vulnerability and Risk Assessment

Projects » Bahamas Water Supply Improvement Project – Climate Related Vulnerability and Risk Assessment

PROJECT DETAILS

Water supply systems on several islands in the archipelago that is the Bahamas, including New Providence, Andros, San Salvador, Crooked Island, Eleuthera, Cat Island and Long Island needed to be improved. The proposed works included the extension of distribution mains in existing supply networks to serve communities that are located beyond the existing extent of those networks. The selected project areas within the islands are located such that they are exposed them to one or more natural occurring phenomena (troughs, storms, hurricanes, etc.). A combination of high slope angles and rainfall leads to slope instabilities and a high potential for landslides. Close proximity to natural and man-made water features (coastal roads) also renders the water supply within the communities vulnerable to flooding, especially during periods of sustained precipitation.
